The Georgia House of Representatives joined the Georgia Senate today in passing a historic call for a convention of states to propose amendments to the Constitution to impose fiscal restraint upon Congress, limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government and establish term limits for federal officials.
SR 736 passed the House this morning by a vote of 107 to 58.
“I am pleased that the Georgia legislature has given voice to the frustrations of millions of Georgians,” said retiring State Sen. Cecil Staton (R-Macon), the resolution’s primary sponsor. “Enough is enough. It is time to impose fiscal and other restraints on our runaway federal government. We honor our founders and the method provided to the states to reform Washington by the passage of SR 736. We urge other states to join us.”
Under Article V of the United States Constitution, if 34 states pass a similar resolution, a convention of states must be called to propose amendments, which proposals must thereafter be referred back to and ratified by at least 38 states to become law.
Among the amendments that could be considered at such a convention are a balanced budget amendment, term limits and limitation of the federal government’s powers under the commerce, general welfare and taxing clauses of the Constitution.
Rep. Buzz Brockway (R-Lawrenceville), the resolution’s primary sponsor in the Georgia House, said, “I’m proud Georgia has taken the lead on the very important work of restoring our Republic. An Article V Convention of States would provide an opportunity for the citizens of this great nation to restore the balance of power between the States and the Federal government. I urge Legislators in the other 49 states to join Georgia and call for a Convention of States for the purpose of proposing amendments to the U.S. Constitution.”
Georgia becomes the first state in the country to pass this historic resolution which is being promoted nationwide by the Convention of States Project, a grassroots, non-profit organization founded this past August by constitutional attorney, Dr. Michael Farris, of Virginia, and Mark Meckler, founder of the political think tank, Citizens for Self-Governance.
The same resolution has been introduced into 13 different state legislatures in 2014 with more to come. COS hopes to gain passage in 34 states in time for a convention to be held in 2016.
Georgia COS State Director Jacquie Peterson, a volunteer business woman from Cedartown stated, “We Georgians have become the hope of the Nation today, with many thanks to our State Legislators for standing for Liberty.”
