Duck Dynasty and How Conservatives Can Win the Culture War

By Alexis Deacon
The latest controversy of the week is the statement Phil Robertson, patriarch of the Duck Dynasty TV Show, made during a GQ interview which ultimately led to A&E firing him.

“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”Phil Robertson

Depending on how sensitive a person is, they may or may not have been offended by the use of the words “vagina” and “anus.” While this statement is awkward, childish and slightly crude it is not X rated and by definition probably describes a harmless thought which might lurk in the minds of many straight males.

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men,Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers—they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.” Phil Robertson

This statement seems to be the one which set off GLAAD. According to GLAAD Robertson was linking homosexual behavior with bestiality, greediness, drunkenness as so forth. However, even GQ pointed out that Robertson was only paraphrasing the Bible.

GLAAD is a United States media monitoring organization which promotes and defends the image of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. By calling themselves a “media monitoring” organization, they are openly admitting to being thought police. In my opinion most people in the LGBT are the same as straight people aside from their sexuality and they are not representative of the ultra leftist hate message the group GLAAD puts out against Christians. The organization itself, not the LGBT community overall, is pretty vicious to Christians. They show favoritism to leftists, like actor Alec Baldwin, who constantly screams gay slurs to people over a “redneck” Christian like Phil Robertson. GLAAD is the quintessential double standard.

Many pundits in the media are comparing the Duck Dynasty fiasco to what Martin Bashir said about Sarah Palin on MSNBC and to what Rush Limbaugh said about Sandra Fluke. In all of these situations, people on social media cried “free speech.” However, the three people who made the newsworthy statements, Robertson, Bashir and Limbaugh were not arrested and the government never got involved. Therefore, I see these events as more cultural issues and free market issues. Interestingly the two men who would be on the conservative side, and who some might say were doing God’s work, are also blessed with talent, success and money and able to ride the wave of controversial storms without suffering. Conversely, the liberal fellow, Bashir, is a big dud and getting fired from a show nobody really watched anyway, makes him even more of a loser. I think we should look at all of these events as conservative plus points on winning the culture war.

You might think Robertson got fired; how did he come out the winner in all of this? Robertson has been successful. He doesn’t need money or a sense of accomplishment because he has already earned that. He may be happier hunting and not having to deal with the TV show and if he does want to stay on the show, Duck Dynasty could just leave A&E and go to another network. They are big money makers. It would be A&E who would lose out.

During my forays into the Internet world of political writing, I’ve come across countless articles written by moderates advising conservatives on how to behave. These type of writers felt we should not have voiced our opinion on Martin Bashir’s remarks about Gov. Palin because it made us as bad as the Left, but I disagree. Martin Bashir said someone should defecate in Gov. Palin’s mouth. What Bashir said, again had nothing to do with free speech. This is a result of the free market. Bashir had the right to say what he said, people had the right to tweet about how furious they were over it and NBC had the right to fire him for putting filth on the air. If you talked to clients and customers about pissing in someone’s mouth, your boss could fire you. If you owned a restaurant, would you let your waiter talk about feces and urine with your customers? I’m a capitalist and if you speak filth to your customers, you lose money. Having standards and professionalism in our society still matters. Speaking out about Bashir was a true victory for conservatives.

In the situation with Rush Limbaugh calling Sandra Fluke a slut, Limbaugh is his own boss and what in the business world is known as an “800 pound gorilla”. He can do what he wants because he brings money in for so many. Plus being the boss gives you freedoms and privileges not available to employees. And I’m saying this despite the fact that I agree with Limbaugh. If someone wants taxpayers to pay for their contraceptives instead of paying for it themselves, it is pretty clear what they are.

When the Duck Dynasty contentious story hit the news, Phil Robertson issued the following statement:

I myself am a product of the 60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

While the Martin Bashir, Rush Limbaugh and Phil Robertson incidents all involve the free market at work. The Duck Dynasty hoopla is still different because it falls into the Lefts ongoing war against God. What Bashir said was disgusting. It was said with hate in his heart and it was target to one specific named individual, Sarah Palin. It wasn’t about a group of people and it wasn’t about a behavior. It was about Sarah Palin. What Phil Robertson was speaking about is faith and Biblical principle. We are all sinners. We just sin in different ways. John Adams, American President and one of the signers of The Declaration of Independence, said “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” Many of the founding fathers made similar statements. This is why it is important for conservatives to fight for their values. The Left wants socialism to succeed but in order for that to prevail, they need to break up the family by destroying the patriarchal society, teaching feminism, promoting abortion and welfare to single moms and making people who support traditional marriage into bigots in the court of public opinion. And the reason they need to break up the family is because when citizens don’t have family and God they turn to government for help. Self reliance, family, churches and synagogues are the enemy of those who derive power from big government. For Marxism to succeed the family and God need to vanquish.

“Those on the right who always lecture us to keep our noses out of social issues don’t understand that if we do, we lose our liberties. This Phil Robertson brouhaha has little to do with “gay” issues and everything to do with thought control. I said a few years ago that not far into the future the left would criminalize as hate speech certain Biblical passages. Hardly far fetched.” David Limbaugh on twitter

The moderate Republicans are already telling conservatives to shut up about the Duck Dynasty firing. They say the left is framing this as a civil rights issue and it’ll be used to paint conservatives in a negative way like they did to Paula Deen. (Deen was a big Obama supporter by the way) Moderates say the issue makes conservatives look like hypocrites by talking about liberty and then telling people who to marry. Most Constitutionalists feel marriage should be decided at the state level by the people who live in that state. How the children of the future will be raised, wheter by a single mom, man and woman, same sex couple or polyamorous group will effect our civil society as a whole, like it or not. Both those who support same sex marriage and those who oppose it should debate peaceful about it. Open debate about all of these hot topics will only help our society. There is nothing more American. Rinos, regardless of whether they are politicians, pundits, bloggers, or citizens on social media never want to fight. They want to go along to get along. They want to live in fear trembling over what the Left will do if we rock the boat or disagree with them. They want to run along behind a Democrat saying “me too, well sort of, please don’t be mad at me.” They are spineless in every way. The very idea of fearing these debates most often serves as an augury for maintaining the status quo. Conservatives don’t usually ask for the firing of outspoken people, we simply voice our opinion back at them. The moderate Republicans need to understand this: God, the truth and what comes from the heart will trump their metrics, charts and miniature whiteboards every time. That is how we win elections.

Conservatives do take the high road when compared to the Left who issues boycotts and harassments against every popular talk radio or news entity which promotes Constitutional thought. What the Left does as evil we can turn into something good. For example I go to these lists the Left creates and I thank all the companies who support conservative talk radio and I hope you will consider doing this as well.

Meanwhile, the Left and the media want us Reagan conservatives to believe that we are no longer a right of center country. They want us to believe that all the hip kids are for same sex marriage and that the Bible, morals and the Constitution are passe thoughts belonging to only old white bigoted men. They want you to feel isolated and alone if you still believe in God or tradition. They want to paint a picture through media, Hollywood and Universities to make you feel you are the last person left in the world with your beliefs. Just let go of the era of the patriarch, the age of Pisces, the fish who represents Jesus. Don’t resist, they say, flow into the age of Aquarius. Social media shows an entirely different story because we are still a conservative nation despite what the media tries to tell us. We are still the silent majority and we are now awake, engaged and fighting to get our country and culture back on every level.

Open debate about why we want future generations raised in a moral civil society is important to our Republic. If I can convey the weight of that, then embarking on social media debates will become worthwhile to both the individual and our nation as a whole. Never underestimate the power one person has to change the world.

  1. This captures the nitty gritty of the subject. I agree with you Alexis.

  2. Once again you nailed it with with eloquence and precision, Alexis. While many are dancing around the edges of this ‘controversy’, you hit it squarely.

    In part, you posted:

Absolutely critical points. Well done, Alexis! God bless you.

  3. Alexis Deacon, it is official. You are my favorite conservative writer. Jack from the Bronx

  4. Its crazy how quickly this blew up, then blew over. Now theres nothing on TV about it, Cracker Barrel put all the merchandise back on the shelves, and the Robertson’s are still all over walmart and grocery stores.

  5. Great post! No surprise that he wasn’t removed from the show permanently.

“Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves” -Abraham Lincoln

  6. Great post Alexis! For anyone who happened to miss Limbaugh’s tweet, heres a link

  7. Lets keep up the fight! We are a conservative nation, and we will get the culture back!

  8. True words Alexis!! Thanks for the post!

  9. I kind of saw this as his way of saying that he was tired of the show and he just wanted to alienate himself from it for good. Like you said, he doesn’t need the show and all of the hassle it brings along with it.

  10. I thought his comments were rude and tasteless but he has the right to say them and I agree with him 100%! He is just speaking his mind and that is still his right.

  11. Phil Robertson stood up and spoke his mind and I applaud him for that! We need more people like that to speak out against what’s wrong with this country and whether people like what he said or not, he has the freedom to do so just like those who challenge what he said.

  12. “Conservatives do take the high road when compared to the Left”. Amen to that!

  13. Great post Alexis! We need more people like you!

  14. +1 for conservative talk radio. We need more supporters!

  15. This attempt at thought control is terrible, and we can’t stand for it. Thanks for the post Alexis!

  16. True words: “Having standards and professionalism in our society still matters.”. I wish more people acted like it!
